Sophia was the daughter of Ludwig Rau and Regina (Lafell)Rau,buried Green Lawn Cemetery Columbus Ohio.Rau family migrated to the United States of America circa 1851.
She was raised to be a dressmaker along with her sister Elizabeth(McNally see Green Lawn cemetery Columbus Ohio).Sophia was also a Mid-wife, and the family still has her record book of the births that she assisted in.Her first husband was James G. Berner of Columbus Ohio Franklin county.
Her brother Louis Rau was a bugler for the Sixth MI Cavalry during the Civil War, intered in Annapolis Cemetery MD.,d.o.d. 1863.Louis died as a prisoner in a Confederate camp.
Sophia married Willard Leonard on DECEMBER 07,1893 in COLUMBUS Franklin county OHIO.Moved with him to St.Louis MI gratiot county .In the 1900 census she is listed as having her step- son Ernest and son Walter .Elizabeth RAU McNally her sister is listed on this census with the family.

In 1895 they gave birth to Walter Louis Leonard on the 27, of June.In Gratiot county MI.
In 1936 she had her neighbor Mrs.Moody write out her will for her as her eyes where going and I wanted to make sure my canned goods get to my son Walter and William Isaac.
She also ask that the hand loomed blanket that has been in Willards' family stay with Walter and his wife Harriette Ann.
Willard and Sophia hosted several family reunions until age caught up with them. Their are existing photos that have been taken dating back to 1910 of this family.
