The following obituary for James Allen appeared in the Windsor Gazette, 14 Apr 1898. "James Allen died at the home of his son in St. Elmo, IL, Apr. 4, 1898. Funeral services were conducted in the Strasburg Baptist church, Apr. 6, burial following in the Richland cemetery. Rev. Mr. Shields had charge of the services. Mr. Allen was 88y 24ds old at the time of his death. He was a native of VA but settled in Big Spring township, Shelby County, IL, in 1855. He was an old Jacksonian Democrat and voted in Shelby county for every Democratic candidate for president from Jackson down to Bryan. He was a close student of current history and his conversation was always interesting. He leaves five sons, only one of whom lives in this county, that being Ex-county Clerk, A. F. Allen of Strasburg. The deceased was J. G. Allen's grandfather."
