The son of Herbert and Agnes Marshall Dixon, he was the first baby born in the Greeley Colony, Weld. Co. Colorado.
His parents had come over from England to settle in the Greeley Colony.

Daily Rocky Mountain News - 6/28/1870 - page 4:
"Among the recent arrivals in Greeley I am most happy to announce that of Horace Greeley Meeker Cameron Dickinson (sic) (Dixon) who arrived on the 21st. His appearance among us made quite a ripple in the current of social life for he is considered the "respresentative man" of a large class of immigrants of that kind whom we may expect. A committee of ladies having waited upon him to ascertain his views concerning Greeley in particular and Colorado in general, have rendered a highly favorable report, as the gentleman is remarkably well pleased, and considers Colorado by far the finest he had ever seen. In consideration of his possessing but limited means at the time of his arrival, the colony have agreed to donate him a town lot and a name."
(He was given Lot 3 in Block 3)

First issue of the Greeley Tribune founded by Nathan Meeker, 12/21/1870:
"Bishop Randall held morning and evening services in Nicholas Hall to an appreciative audience. The first child born in town was baptised and christened Horace Greeley Dickinson (sic)(Dixon). The board of trustees have given a lot to said Horace."

"The Dixons settled on the North Fork of the Poudre river near the Spanish Colony. Horace and brother Marshall were joined by a sister Ada and brothers Charley and Ernest. Oldtimers still refer to the bridge south of the Colony as "the Dixon bridge." As Horace found a niche in the history of Greeley, little Charley also left a mark on the pages. He was born July 23, 1875 and died Sept. 2, age 1 month 9 days. His mother stepped outside to hang out some clothes, leaving the baby with his little sister. When Agnes returned a few minutes later, the baby was dead, choked to death with the croup. They buried the baby under a big tree on the bank of the river near the Dixon bridge and built a wooden fence around the grave. As the fence deteriorated over the years, some kind person or persons have replaced the old wood with a metal fence and it stands today"
