Harry was born in Newton MA. His family was in Hopedale in 1900 and in Needham in 1910. He left home at an early age, crossing into Canada in 1912 at age 18 listed as "wrightmaster" from Indiana, crossing from Plainfield Indiana to Sudbury Ontario. He worked for the Great Lakes shipping industry for a period.
He took out a marriage license in 1914 in Chicago. His World War I registration of June 1917 shows he lived in Hammond, Indiana, a blacksmith for the Standard Steel RR Car Company, married with no children. Son Harry born 1918 in Hammond, a 2nd child born in 1919, daughter Margaret born 1920 in Detroit. Son Robert was born in 1921, son Russell in 1923, and son David in 1924 when he moved back to Needham, Mass. By the 1930 census the family lived on Glen St. in Natick.

May have married Ruth Bennett briefly after the death of his wife.
