In October 1874, Sam married Emily Lanning in Franklin County, Indiana. After the birth of their first two sons, they came in a covered wagon from IN to NE where Emily's uncle owned land.

They lived there for several years before trying to make a run for land in Oklahoma's Cherokee Strip scheduled for 16 September 1893; they arrived the last week in September.

The Hazen's made their home in Ponca City and later in Fairfax where Sam was a carpenter and built several of the homes which remain today.

Notes:

It has been suggested by some that Samuel Albert Hazen was the son of Harrison Hazen & Mary Jane Miles. This has been disproved by several prominant sources: Stanley S. Hazen, "Hazens in America," and by the Hazen family association and Marji Hazen, a descendant of Harrison Hazen. Harrison Hazen did have a son named Samuel L. of a differnt birth year who died in Kansas with a different wife. It also has been thought that Samuel's father may have been john Townsend Hazen, son of Daniel Hazen, but no hard verification has been set forth.

Notes:

It is said that Samuel Albert Hazen was raised by Rebecca Hazen Davis-Barr in IN, a sister of John Townsend Hazen. John's other sister was Eleanor Hazen White who raised Mary Ellen Hazen, sister of Samuel Albert Hazen. Eleanor Hazen White is buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery and Mary Ellen Hazen Smith is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, both in Franklin County, Indiana.

The proof that John Townsend Hazen was Sam and Mary Ellen's father comes from Mary Ellen Hazen Smith's Death Certificate and from Daniel Hazen's obituary. Their mother has never been identified. John Townsend Hazen married twice after Samuel Albert and Mary Ellen Hazen were born, but he did not acknowledge either child in his will.

Sam's sister, Mary Ellen Hazen, was born 18 Jan 1849 in Oak Forest, Franklin County, Indiana and lived many years in Brookville, IN. She married William Smith April 19, 1865 in Brookville, IN.

Mary Ellen Hazen Smith died 17 Apr 1926 in Connersville, IN and was buried in Maple Grove cemetery in Brookville. See Find A Grave Memorial# 57287083.

Her death certificate #12538, Registration #85 lists her father as John Hazen with mother unknown, and one of her obits mentions her brother Samuel Hazen of Ponca City, OK.
