17-Year-Old Area Youth Dies
When Motorcycle Hits Car

TOWN OF SPRINGFIELD - Funeral services were held ysterday for Nick A. Augustine, 12 Abbott street, Fort Plain, who died of injuries sustained Friday morning in the Town of Springfield when his motorcycle crashed into an automobile. The accident occurred on a winding section of County Road 31 in the Town of Springfield, Otsego County, about a half mile south of Salt Springville and the Montgomery County line. According to Trooper K. W. Rose of the State Police Substation at Richfield Springs, who investigated, the 17-yearold Augustine was southbound, rounding a right curve, when his motorcycle crossed over into the northbound lane and collided head-on with an oncoming car operated by Leo C. Dygert, Roof street, Fort Plain. The youth, reportedly enroute to Glimmerglass State Park, was thrown from his cycle upon impact. Dygert was unhurt, according to the investigating officer. Otsego County Cornoner George Tillapaugh, Cooperstown, pronounced Augustine dead at the scene at 11:55 a.m. He attributed the cause of death to a fractured skull. Also assisting was the emergency squad from the Cherry Valley Fire Department. No summons were issued. Born Jan. 30, 1960, in Amsterdam, Nick Augustine was the son of Blontino and Geraldine Siver Augustine. He would have entered his senior year at Fort Plain Central School in the fall. He is survived by his parents; a sister, also residing at home; his maternal grandparents, Mrs. Gilda Mucha, Glens Falls, and Harold Siver, Fort Plain RD 1; aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services at 9 a.m. at the Gray Funeral Home were followed by a Mass of Death and Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. William Roos, pastor, at St. James Catholic Church, at 9:30 a.m. Interment was made in the Fort Plain Cemetery. Father Roos led in the recitation of the Rosary at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
