Nan was the daughter of Harvy Sylvester Eckrote (possibly born in Geneva, Indiana or Geneva, Ohio) and Emma Arvilla Sales Eckrote, born in 1869 in Delaware, Ohio, to her parents, Simon Jack Sales and Rachael Ann Biggs.

Nan had 10 brothers and sisters, namely Mrs. Alta Bugh, Mrs. Gertrude (Gertie) Minger, Joe O. Eckrote, Earl, Nell, Verle, Pearl, Roscoe Charles Eckrote, William (Bill) Eckrote, and Mrs. Alma Shoner. Their parents, Harvy and Emma, later divorced.
