Lawrence Raymond Thorpe, born Aug. 2, 1916, died July 31, 2007. He was born to Ray and Anna in Lansing, Iowa. Larry was the eleventh of 15 children. In 1938, he married Bea Race, the mother of his son, Charles. On July 18, 1941 he married Esther Marie Knickerbocker. That same year he volunteered to serve his country by joining the Army where he received the Purple Heart during World War II. Larry lived in Omak most of his adult life. Where he worked 18 years for Biles-Coleman Lumber. In 1964 he worked the Spruce Mills in Ketchikan, Alaska, returning to his family in 1965. While working construction some of his jobs included Cross State Hwy., Grand Coulee Dam, Wells Dam and the North Omak Hwy. 97 bridge. He retired to a caretaker position for Aeneas Valley Ranch near Tonasket. In 2005, he moved to Shelton, Wash. to be near his daughter, Sharon and son-in-law, Jim. His home at Maple Glenn gave him an extended family in their loving and caring staff.
He is survived by his son, Charles (Pam); daughters, Marjorie (Bill) McClellan and Sharon (Jim) Barstow; granddaughter, Kimber (John) Hughes; great-grandchildren, Tristan and Halsey Hughes; brothers, Lee of California, Gene and Zane of Iowa. He is also survived by his very special companions, Kay Temple, who was always there for him while at Maple Glenn and JoAnn Ball who cared for Larry for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 11 brothers and sisters and his wives.
Graveside services are planned for Monday, August 27, 2007, 2 p.m. at Omak Memorial Garden. There will be a friends and family gathering at 2425 Elmway at his daughter Marjie's home from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. after the services.
