Joseph A. Shoemaker, aged 86 years, a veteran of the Civil War, died at 9 o'clock Monday morning at his home in Nanty-Glo. He had been in feeble health for a number of years, death being due to the ailments incident to old age.

Mr. Shoemaker was born in Jackson township, August 16, 1843, and practically his entire life was spent in this locality. In August, 1862, at the age of 19, he enlisted in Company G. 11th Pa. Cav., and served in the war until honorably discharged in June, 1865.

Mr. Shoemaker and Sarah Jane Rager, also of Jackson township, were united in marriage on June 24, 1870. Mrs. Shoemaker and six of their ten children survive, the latter being: Mrs. James Jackson, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Ervin Belford, Nanty-Glo; Mrs. Elmer Rodkey, Vinco; Mrs. James Skelly, Wilmore; John Shoemaker, Redhouse, N. Y., and Burley Shoemaker, Nanty-Glo. There are also 33 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren living.

Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30. Rev Guy Gooderham, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance church, officiated. Burial was in Munday's cemetery. Six grandsons of the deceased acted as pallbearers.
