The son of Charles Francis Vatterott I and Margaret Elizabeth "Maudie" Harvey, Gregory married Mary "Patricia" Dolan on 09 Jun 1936 in St. Louis, Missouri. They were the parents of 5 children.

Gregory was a tile contractor and owner of the St. Louis County Tile Company. The business was located in Clayton, Missouri.

On 18 Nov 1945, Gregory rented a plane at Lakeside Airport in East St. Louis, Illinois in order to take a business trip to Louisville, Kentucky with his plant manager, Ivan B. Bendorf. It was said that Gregory was accustomed to making business trips by plane. He was an experienced pilot and owned an open plane of his own, but it was not suited for flying in colder weather.

He and Ivan were the only passengers on board the 3-seater Stinson as they returned from Louisville. They ran into thick fog over Illinois, 105 miles northeast of St. Louis. By that time, they were about 30 miles off course.

Farmers in the area reported hearing the plane's motor cut off and on just before it went down. It crashed into a wooded hillside on a farm 4 miles southeast of Stewardson, Illinois. Parts of the plane were strewn for 150 feet. The bodies of both men were found near the wreckage.

At the time of his death, Gregory was 34 years, 3 months and 7 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Patricia; 2 daughters; 2 sons, with the youngest being only 2-months-old; his father, Charles Vatterott I; 6 brothers; 3 sisters; and many extended family members.

In addition to his mother, Gregory was preceded in death by a son who died in infancy; and 1 sister, Rita Vatterott.

Funeral services were conducted on 21 Nov 1945 at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Vinita Park, Missouri.

Gregory's widow, Patricia, married his widowed brother, Charles Vatterott II, in 1948. Charles adopted the children of Gregory and Patricia.

Patricia lived until 1999 and was buried next to Gregory.
