Lot 1-119-3 Walker, James L - husband to Ruth Joan Doddridge Walker

James L. Walker 87, of Indianapolis, passed away August 4, 2009 after a short illness. He was born July 19, 1922 in Reed Station, Indiana to Alfred and Emma Walker. His parents and his 6 brothers and sisters pre-decease him. Jim graduated from Yorktown High School and Ball State University (1944). After his graduation from Ball State he entered public accounting with Ernst & Ernst. He founded the CPA firm, Walker & Weber in 1966, which later became Walker, Carvey & Associates, LLP where he practiced until his death. He was a past-president of the Indiana CPA Society. Ball State University, where Jim and Ruth met, was an important part of his life. He was alumni president, 1950-52. It was said in the Ball State publication, The Alumnus, Spring 1950, that "He is one of the great group of boys who worked in the Ball State Bookstore while in college, developing an extensive acquaintance with Ball Staters while on campus and extending that acquaintance among alumni". He was honored as a Distinguished Alumni of Ball State in 1970 and served on the Ball State University Foundation for 25 years and held the title of Director Emeriti at the time of his death. While at Ball State he was a cheerleader which surely helped tune his interest in sports. An enthusiastic spectator of golf, football and basketball, 1975 brought a new level of interest in sports when he became a partner in Market Square Associates which owned the Indiana Pacers from 1975-1979. He was Treasurer of the team and was the last ABA Governor for the Indiana Pacers and the first NBA Governor for the Indiana Pacers. He was instrumental in the negotiations which led the Pacers into the NBA and brought the 3 point shot into the NBA. During his life, Jim was a member of numerous boards and clubs, many of which he outlived. He was a member of Meridian Hills Country Club and served as president in 1963. Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Doddridge Walker; daughters, Catherine (John) Carvey of Indianapolis and Nancy (Tony) Henderson of Taylorsville, UT; 4 granddaughters, Virginia Carvey (Joshua) Chapman of Herndon, VA and Heather Henderson, Emily Henderson and Holly Henderson of Taylorsville, UT.
