Born in Napanee, Ontario, he was the ninth Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) serving from 1938 to 1951. In 1912, he graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario where he graduated. Shortly after graduation, he secured a commission in the RNW Mounted Police. After serving in World War I as a lieutenant in the cavalry in France and Belgium, he served in the Yukon from 1919 to 1938 as Justice of the Peace, Coroner, Sheriff, Game Inspector and Customs Officer. He was the great-great grandson of U.S. President Zachary Taylor and grandson of Civil War Confederate Officer John Taylor Wood. He was the son of Zachary Taylor Wood who the Canadian Government named Mount Wood after in 1998. Stuart Taylor Wood died in Regina.
