Flying Officer (Pilot) Royal Air Force 235 Sqdn. Age: 27. Service No: 46707. Son of William George and Lily Amos; husband of Mary E. Amos, of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

On Thursday, 12 November 1942, P/O W. F. AMOS, R.A.F., and Sgt J. D. WALTERS, R.A.F.V.R. of No. 235 Squadron at R.A.F. Chivenor in Beaufighter Z/235 (T.5284) undertook the second Fishery Patrol of the day. Bristol Beaufighter, registration serial T.5284, was a Mark VI.C version of the aircraft, built by the Fairey Aeroplane Company Ltd., of Stockport, Cheshire. This was the first operational sortie undertaken by P/O AMOS since his return from R.A.F. Leuchars on 10 October 1942, and it was the first time that he and Sgt WALTERS had been crewed together.

961402 Sgt J. D. WALTERS, R.A.F.V.R. Observer/WOp

They left R.A.F. Chivenor at 11.45 hours and carried out their patrol as ordered. For some reason, P/O AMOS decided to land at R.A.F. Predannack in Cornwall at 17.22 hours, and Z/235 crashed while he was attempting to touch down. P/O AMOS was killed, and his Observer Sgt WALTERS injured. Sgt WALTERS was taken to Mullion Hospital, where his injuries were described as ‘Not Serious’. The subsequent enquiry found that the engines had cut out leading to the aircraft undershooting the final approach to R.A.F. Predannack. The Operations Record Book for R.A.F. Predannack states that Z/235 had run short of fuel.

F/O AMOS was buried in the N.W. Section, Row C., Grave 28 of the Helston Cemetery, close to the scene of the crash. The inscription on his gravestone reads: ‘DEEPLY REGRETTED BY HIS SORROWING WIFE MARY LOVINGLY REMEMBERED ALWAYS’.
