Master Sgt. (USA retired) William D. Herring Jr., aka Pop-Pa, passed from this world on Sept. 29, 2009, at the age of 57.

Graveside service is Friday, Oct. 2, at 10 a.m. at Santo Cemetery, Pastor Bobby Cates officiating. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home.

Bill was born Nov. 13, 1951, in Scotia, Calif. He was raised in Santo and attended school in Santo. Bill joined the Marine Corps in November 1968 and served three years with a tour to Vietnam. Upon returning Bill attended Amarillo Junior College and then Weatherford Junior College. He received a bachelor's degree from Columbia College in Business Administration.

Bill joined the Army in April 1974 and served proudly until his retirement in October 1991. He married Rosemary in 1975 and they traveled this world together with their family. Bill's pride was always his children Jon, Amanda, Kathy and Mikey and the fact they are all college graduates.

After retiring from the Army, Bill worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was a letter carrier in Mineral Wells and Fort Worth. He loved Friday nights at Miller Stadium in the fall. In 2000 Bill started working for KBR and worked in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait.

Survivors include his wife and best friend, Rosemary; his children, Jonathan and fiancé, Stacey, of Athens, Ill., Amanda and son-in-law, Chris Peterson, of Leander, Texas, Katheryn and son-in-law, John Stewart, of Dripping Springs, Texas, and Michael, of Houston; four beautiful grandbabies, Jacob Peterson, Madison Stewart, Megan Peterson and Lacey Stewart; mother, Dorothy Cates Tuggle; step-mother, Patsy Herring; sister and brother-in-law, Darla and Roger Foreman, of Santo; sisters Patty Guzman, Darla Mae and Tommy Hopkins and Donna and Tim Ford, of Mineral Wells; brothers and sister-in-laws, Matt and Debbie Herring, of Gatesville, Texas, Joe William and Sean Herring, of Walnut Springs, Texas, F.L. Herring and Paul Sutton, of Mineral Wells; uncles and aunts including W.C. and Faye Herring, Otha and Lorrine Herring, and J.W. Pollock of Santo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Joe Lee Herring; grandparents, Lossie and Lilly Herring, and Charlie and Edna Stephens; father, William D. Herring Sr.; step-father, Douglas Cates; and his aunt, Clara Pollock.

To this world he was just one, but to me he is my world…
