Son of William Hughes 1802-1875 (Tenn) and Elizabeth Keller 1814-1870. Polk was a rancher.

James Knox Polk "Poke" Hughes married Miss Talitha Emily Beaty in east Texas on 5 October 1876. The couple settled on Cantaloupe Prairie on the line of Palo Pinto and Stephens County, where he lived until a few months ago when he moved to Graham, Texas to make their home with a daughter, Miss Ella Hughes. Five children were born to this union, one son and one daughter have passed away.

Services were held at the home officiated by Rev. Barney Roark of South Bend Baptist Church.
