Gladys was born December 10, 1917 in Clatskanie Oregon to Arnold and Gladys Davey. As a young child, she grew up across the Columbia River in Eagle Cliff, Washington where her father worked as a fisherman for the Hume Brothers cannery. Gladys moved with her parents to Columbia City as a teenager in 1933.
On September 8, 1945, while Millard Stevens was on leave from the Army, she married him in front of the fireplace of her parent's family home. After Millard came home from the service, Millard and Gladys raised their family in that same home. Gladys has continued to reside in the same house until her death. She and Millard both spent their careers working at the Paper Mill in St. Helens where they both eventually retired.
Gladys enjoyed sewing, especially for her grandchildren. She loved to bake, especially apple pies from her apple tree. She was an avid reader and Bible student. She enjoyed camping in her motor home with her children and grandchildren. She loved playing the piano and organ.
She was preceded in death by Millard, her husband of 49 years, in 1994. She is survived by her sons Dennis of Scappoose, Oregon, Mark of Kent, Washington, and Wayne of Yankton, Oregon as well as 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, a sister Viola White of Portland Oregon, and a brother Gilbert Davey.
Gladys was a charter member of the local Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she filled many offices including pianist, organist and church treasurer. Services will be held Friday, March 21 at 1:00 PM at the Scappoose-St. Helens Seventh-day Adventist Church.
