John Wiley (J.W.) Wagnon, 82, of Pine Bluff died Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 8, 1927 at Banks, Arkansas, son of the late William Wiley Wagnon and Grace Pearl Hamaker Wagnon. He graduated from high school at Banks.

He served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman apprentice V-6 and was Honorably Discharged in 1948. He then served in the U.S. Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1952. He was awarded an Army Commendation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars.

He married Betty Hutcheson in 1957, and moved from Camden to Pine Bluff and begin work at the International Paper Company where he retired after 35 years of service.

He was an active and devoted member of First Assembly of God church where he served in many capacities but most recently as deacon and greeter.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed squirrel and deer hunting and established the Wiley Deer Camp at Blue Springs.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Viola Stone and Ivy Wolfe, and his brothers, Floyd, Felton and Earl Wagnon.

Survivors are his wife of 52 years, Betty Wagnon, four daughters, Grace Varnell and husband, Jim of Pine Bluff, Donna Cox and husband, Steve of White Hall, Cindy McCourt of San Antonio, Texas, Amy Layne and husband Rick of East End, nine grandchildren, James Varnell and wife Barbara, John Varnell and wife Jennifer, Derrick Cox and wife Julie, Tyler Cox, Jesse Cox, Jessica McCourt, Jeremy McCourt, Jacob McCourt and Maddison Layne; four great-grandchildren; Jake Cox, Alyssa McCourt, Lily Varnell and Alicia McKinney.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Darrell Logan, Richard Wilson, Bob Porter, Fred Sebourn, Jerry Drake, Gene Hughes and Ron Cheshier.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, at First Assembly of God, with Reverends Bryan Jarrett and Ron Woods officiating.

Graveside services with military honors will be 2:30 PM Saturday, at Williams Cemetery, Banks, with (Ret) Lt. Col. (Ch) Reese Hutcheson officating. Burial by Ralph Robinson and Son.

The family will receive friends at Robinson's, Friday, 5-7 PM. They wish to offer a special thanks caregivers, Lisa Woolley and Inita Williams

JW never knew a stranger. His smile and firm handshake were one of the first things you got when you visited the 1st Assembly Church. He was one of the nicest and most friendly men at the church, and will be missed by all that knew him.
