Mary Tolman, 90, Pioneer, Dies Thursday
Mrs. Mary Jane Gorringe Tolman, 90, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Egbert, Murtaugh, 10:30 am. Dec. 4, after a long illness.
Born Oct 12, 1857 Bountiful, Utah, daughter of William Osborn Gorringe and Fannie Burgess Gorringe, two years after her parents arrived in Utah from Brighton, England. They crossed the plains in a covered wagon.
Married J. Alvin Tolman Dec. 12, 1878, Salt Lake City Endowment house. The couple left Salt Lake City and settled in Oakley in 1881.
She was mother of 13 children, one having preceded her in death several years ago.
Surviving are children: William A.[Alvin] Tolman, Pocatello; Owen of Oakley; Cyrus of Carey, Idaho; Mrs. Alice Larson of Burley; Mrs. Lydia Egbert of Murtaugh; Osborn of Fairview, Wyo. Parley of Oakley, Mrs. Fannie Cunningham of Burley; Daniel of Vale, Oregon, Mrs. Louise Cranney of Oakley; Mrs. Myrtle Freestone of Kimberly; and Mrs. Tressa Hunting of Paul. Survived by 99 grandchildren, 146 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Lydia Reed of Pocatello, and two brothers, Fred and Dan Gorringe of Oakley. Four of her grandchildren are serving on LDS missions. [Preceeded in death by son Rulon Burl Tolman].
She had one son in World War I and 42 grandsons in World War II, all of whom returned safely to their homes. She was awarded a certificate of honor as a native pioneer by the 1947 Utah Centennial Commission.
Celebrated her 90th birthday Oct. 12 at home daughter Mrs. Alice Larson, Burley.
Services will be held Wednesday 2 pm. at Oakley LDS tabernacle Bishop M W. Cranney of the Marion Ward officiating. Interment under the direction of Paynes will be Marion.
