Joseph was the son of Rev. William and Martha Hodges Murphy (Rev Wm. Murphy [Sr]'s first wife. After Martha's death, his father married Sarah Barton.

Joseph was the husband of possibly first to Jane (nee Barton) Murphy and then to Sarah (nee McDaniel) Murphy to which he fatherd Isaac, Keturah, William, Keziah, John, Sarah, Joseph, Malinda, Lewis, Tempy, Cynthia, Patsey, Rachel, Mariney, Matilda, and James. The back of his headstone states he served in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolutionary War.
