Mary Elizabeth Masters was the first of three children born to Jacob and Fannie Masters. Her father was a farmer and Mary grew up helping on the farm. Mary was not given an education and she never learned to read or write. At age 19 Mary married Robert E. Newell who was 18 at the time.

Robert's mother, Susan, gave the couple 50 acres to farm. Robert built a log house, a barn, a smoke house and a chicken house on the land. They were to raise 8 children in that home during the 34 years they lived there. The home was a big log house with a porch across the front and a side room built on the back of it for the kitchen and dining room. It had a floored upstairs with the joist showing down below. The children slept upstairs. There was a huge fireplace, thought to be about 4 feet wide, that was made of rock and stone and heated the entire house. It was considered as nice a home as any in the area.

On the farm, the family grew corn, oats, wheat and beans. In one section they had an orchard where they grew apples, peaches, plums and grapes. People would come from miles around to buy their fruit. The family also had hogs, cows and chickens on the farm. Although they owned a farm, Robert himself was not a farmer. Mary and the children worked the farm. Later, Robert hired men to do the plowing and farm work.

Mary's children were lively and she had her hands full but she was a good homemaker for her family. She loved her family dearly and they in turn loved her. She would often help out with her grandchildren. Her children and grandchildren speak of her with great fondness. They tell about the delicious fruit pies, breads and biscuits she would make for the family's daily needs.

Mary loved to quilt. In what little spare time she had she was always quilting. Mary and Robert lived in Bollinger County until 1920 when they moved to Chaffee. Mary died on January 15,1942, having had a paralytic stroke and hemorrhage of the brain. All but one of her children and many grandchildren were by her side at the time of her death. Her family was deeply saddened by her death.
