His parents received word of his death Saturday from the U.S. Army. The telegram said a mine or a booby trap killed him.
The Rockdale soldier was in Vietnam since June. His parents said their last letter from him was dated January 22nd. He was on a patrol boat and not in the thick of the fighting, according to his letter, Mrs. Kos said. He was with the 101st Airborne Division.
The serviceman was born in Joliet and attended St. Joseph Grade School in Rockdale. He graduated from Joliet West High School, with the Class of 1967.
John worked at the Town & Country Bowling Lanes prior to his induction on January 28, 1969. He had his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
His father is employed by Ford Motor Company in Chicago Heights.
In addition to his parents, survivors include a brother, Pvt. Donald W. Kos, 21 of Fort Carson, Colorado, who has been in service since September; his 14-year-old sister, Jane Marie, a student at Joliet West and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Giovanna Moruzzi of Joliet.
Funeral mass was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockdale on February 4, 1970. Interment: St. Joseph Cemetery, Joliet, Illinois.
