Major League Baseball Player. He was a catcher for fourteen years in the majors. He had only a single at bat with the Cincinnati Reds in 1906, but three years later he began a long career with the Detroit Tigers. In fact he ended up number two on the Tigers all-time list in number of games played at the catcher position. He played with the Tigers from 1909 to 1920. In 1925, Ty Cobb hired him to help coach the Tigers and Stanage also played in several games that year. In 3,503 plate appearances he batted a modest .234 with 321 runs batted in. Although he was a weak hitter, he was considered to be the American League's best catcher in the 1910s. He currently holds the American League record for assists by a catcher which he set in 1911 with 212. He had over a 100 assists for seven straight years, being the league leader in that category in 1911, 1912, and 1914. His career average of 1.29 assists per game is the 5th best in ML history. He also led the league in double plays by a catcher in 1912 with 14. While he was one of the greatest catchers of all time in assists, he also was one of the most prone to committing errors. His 41 errors in 1911 was the most by a catcher in the 20th-century.
