Della Elizabeth Beitzel, age 88, of Mechanicsburg passed away Friday, October 2, 2009 at Bethany Village. Born May 5, 1921 in Carlisle, she was the daughter of the late Howard H. and Ida G. (Sipe) Whitcomb.
Della graduated from Mechanicsburg High School with the Class of 1939. She served in several bookkeeping positions, including Milleisen Lumber Company, and Keeley Realty. In addition, Della was elected to the office of Tax Collector of Upper Allen Township in the 1960's, a position she held for 12 years.

A large part of Della's life revolved around Shepherdstown United Methodist Church where she was an active member for over 70 years. She sang in the church choir for more than 60 years, taught adult Sunday School classes, was a member of the United Methodist Women, and Seniors of Shepherdstown (SOS). In addition, she was a member of the "Never Alone Support Group" since her husband's death. She performed volunteer services over the years for "Meals on Wheels", Messiah Village gift shop and New Hope Ministries. She loved playing games (and winning) with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed time spent with her pinochle group.

Della was blessed to be married to Harry F. Beitzel for 55 years, from 1941 until his death in 1996. She was ushered into heaven on the same day as her son, Denny Beitzel.

She is survived by a son, Dr. Barry J. Beitzel and his wife Carol of Gurnee, IL; a son Vernon L. Beitzel and wife Beverly of Lexington, VA; a daughter, Dixie L. Rider of Mechanicsburg; a daughter-in-law, Madeline M. Beitzel of Mechanicsburg; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard, Nevin and James, all of Mechanicsburg; and a sister, Marion Peters, of State College, PA.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Shepherdstown United Methodist Church (SUMC), followed by the burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
