John Gillis Payson born February 7, 1925 in Glendale, California, died peacefully September 29, 2009 in Tucson, Arizona.
He was the son of Guy Howard Payson of Woodstock, New Brunswick and Gladys Kemm Payson of Halifax, Nova Scotia, who predeceased him.
He was also preceded in death by his three siblings, June Payson Lowry, Howard Kemm Payson and Newton Herbert Payson.
John grew up in Glendale and North Hollywood. Enlisting at age 18 in the United States Navy, he was first a Midshipman and then an Ensign from 1943 to 1947. After his honorable discharge, he continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant, JG until 1959. John graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1949. In 1950 the same university granted him an M.B.A. and in 1954 he obtained C.P.A. certification in California. He worked for Western Oil and Gas Assn., Calif. Bank and Arthur Andersen & Co. while living in the Los Angeles area from 1951 to 1960, in which year the family moved to Tucson, where John was employed by the Murphey Investment Trusts for 35 years.
He was a Trustee for the John and Helen Murphey Foundation until his death. He spent many hours overseeing the Foundation's contributions to scholarships for students at the University of Arizona and Pima College. In previous years John also spent time on the Boards of Southern Ariz. Homebuilders Assn. and the U of A Foundation.
He is survived by Patricia Crow Payson, his wife of 58 years; children, Catherine June Payson, Ann Louise (Neil) Manji, Richard Kemm Payson and grandchildren, Julia, Alison, David John, twins Ryan and Sean, as well as niece, Sheridan Payson (Ernie) Pyle and nephews, Howard and Guy Payson.
An avid tennis player since his high school days in southern California, he was still on the tennis court at age 84 two days before his final, sudden illness on September 17. He also spent many happy hours on the golf course with friends.
Though not truly fond of travel, he and Pat went to such far flung places as the Galapagos, Kenya, Antarctica and Europe. John was dearly loved and much admired by all his family. We are all sincerely thankful for the wonderful years and precious times he spent with us. We will miss our husband, father, grandfather and uncle more than words can express.
It was John's wish to have no formal service. Donations in his memory may be made to Tucson Community Tennis, Primavera Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson, Community Food Bank or the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.
