He grew up in Wood River, Nebraska and received his education at Rural District 16, Hall County, graduating from Wood River High School in 1964. He received his B.S. degree for Kearney State College in 1968 and his Juries Doctored from University of Nebraska, College of Law in 1971.
He was a member of the Order of The Coif and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.
Survivors of the immediate family include two sons, Mark Thompson of Buffalo, New York, and Daniel Thompson of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Ann Thompson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his mother, Florence Windfield of Grand Island, Nebraska; two brothers, Tim Thompson of Omaha, Nebraska and Doug Thompson of Wood River, Nebraska and a host of other friends and relatives.
