CITY ATTORNEY H.K. ANGELL, 37,
DIES TODAY AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
HAD EMERGENCY
OPERATION MAY 16
Condition Had Been Critical With
Second Operation Needed
PROMINENT LOCAL ATTORNEY
Active Member of Republican Party
In Cortland County

City Attorney H. Kenyon Angell, 37, one of Cortland's leading attorneys, died at 11:15 this morning at the Cortland County Hospital, after an illness of two weeks.

Attorney Angell underwent an operation for ruptured appendix early in the morning on May 16. His condition was reported improved and his recovery was expected. Last Tuesday his condition again became critical and a second operation was performed. After lingering between life and death for several days, hospital officials and attending physicians report slight gains, and on Thursday hopes were again held for his recovery. His condition suddenly turned critical again Friday night.

He was born at South Otselic, July 22, 1906, a son of George B. and Leora Kenyon Angell. He received his early education in the public schools of South Otselic and in 1928 received the degree of LL.B. at Syracuse University. After a year as a clerk in the office of Cleveland J. Kenyon at Tully, he was admitted to the bar in 1931. He immediately located in Cortland as an associate of John T. Ryan. When his partner went to Albany as an attorney for the State Public Service Commission, he established a private practice.

Several years ago he again formed a partnership with John Fitzgerald of this city. The firm had offices at 61 Main Street. He was appointed city attorney in 1936, succeeding former Supreme Court Justice C. Leonard O'Connor. He was a staunch Republican and was affiliated with South Otselic Lodge, 659, F. & A. M., Loyal Order of Moose, Cortland Lodge of Elks, Delta Lambda Fraternity, and Cortland County and New York Bar Associations.

He was married twice. His first wife was the former Miss Martha Willson of New York City. She was a classmate at Syracuse University. She died in 1939. They had three children, George, William and James. His second marriage occurred August 29, 1943. His wife, who survives, was the former Miss Thelma Parmiter of this city.

Surviving also are a sister, Mrs. J.P. Martin of South Otselic, and two half brothers, F.B. Angell of South Otselic, and Lynn B. Angell of Utica.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 at the Beard Memorial Home with Rev. Darrell J. Westlake, pastor of the First Congregational Church officiating. Friends may call at the late residence, 31 Madison Street, Wednesday afternoon and evening. Burial will be made in Cortland Rural Cemetery.
