Larry Hacker, was a Senior State Trooper in West Virginia. He was assigned to the State Police Detachment in Harrisville, West Virginia, but recently had transferred to the St. Mary's Detachment. He died in the line of duty at age 34. Trooper Hacker and a Trooper Trainee were answering a complaint call about 10:00 P.M. from the suspect's neighbor. The suspect had parked his vehicle on Ritchie County Highway, Route # 9-9, blocking his neighbor from his house. After blocking the roadway, the suspect retreated to a knoll where he could watch the truck. Trooper Hacker responded to the call and was ambushed with a high powered rifle. After additional Police agencies arrived, a gun battle ensued. It lasted between 20-30 minutes. The shooter would not allow the Paramedics near Trooper Hacker, after he shot him. The gunman fled, and Trooper Hacker was finally flown out by helicopter at 11:30 P.M. to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital where died from his wounds about 1:00 A.M. Two hours after the shooting, the suspect was taken into custody in a nearby wooded area. He was charged with murder, but while in jail, committed suicide. Trooper Hacker was survived by a wife and two children.
