WESLEY R. "JOHN" COLE, 87, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 1, 2009, at William Newton Hospital in Winfield.

Born on March 1, 1922, in Rose Hill, Kansas, he was the son of Harold Allison and Bertha (Mitchell) Cole.

He was raised and received his education in Udall, Kansas. As a young man he helped on the family farm. John later began employment for the Santa Fe Railroad and worked there until entering the United States Army. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Cole proudly served his country receiving the Purple Heart and 4 Bronze Stars.

Following his honorable discharge, John returned to Udall. He was united in marriage on January 12, 1946 to Etta Louise Black at the Cowley County Courthouse in Winfield. The couple made their home in Udall. He continued working for Santa Fe Railroad and later was employed with Stellbar Oil Company in Udall. In 1969 the couple moved to Great Bend where he was employed by Slawson Oil. He retired in 1984 and the couple moved to Winfield.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #10 in Winfield. John enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling to the casinos.

His family includes: His wife: Louise of the home; His daughter: Linda Arlene Harter of Winfield, KS; His brother: Gilbert Cole of Tucson, AZ; His grandchildren: Steve W. Kennedy, Michael P. Kennedy, Rodney A. Kennedy, Debra Schmiter and John Cole; and His great-grandchildren: Brittney Kennedy, Chad Kennedy, Melissa Kennedy, Adam Schnitzer, Lauren Schnitzer and Makayla Cole. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Lee Cole; his brothers, Claude, Roy and Jimmy Cole; and his sisters, Hazel Robinson and Dolly Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Military committal honors will follow at the Udall Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M., Monday, October 5, 2009. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., that evening.

A memorial has been established in John's name for the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
