Daniel Cody Openshaw, born June 28, 1982, returned to the awaiting arms of his loving Heavenly Father and Savior, whose atonement makes families eternal, on Saturday April 5, 2006. Cody loved life and adventure; yet in his own humble way would be the first to reach out when there was someone in need. His countenance drew people to him and his humor solidified their relationships. Those who came to know Cody knew of his loving and caring heart, and how he would go out of his way to make sure others were happy. He was a revered family member and loyal friend. Cody will be deeply missed by family and friends. Cody was born to D. Kim and Anita E. Openshaw in Logan, Utah. Cody is survived by his parents and siblings, Damian (Sarauna) Openshaw, Cammie (Billy) Toone, Derek (Laura) Openshaw, Jeffrey Openshaw, Shandee (BJ) Nelson, Joshua, Micah and Garet Openshaw; and his grandparents, NaOma Openshaw, and John and Bernice Evans. He was the uncle to Seniada, Bri, Anna, Mc Kyle, Tristan, Nikyan, Dreyden, and Mathias Openshaw, Shalyi Smith, Jocee Toone, Mazi Nelson, and Daisy Openshaw. Cody graduated from Mt. Crest High School (2000) and joined the United States Army. He completed basic training at Ft. Jackson on April 19, 2001, and entered Airborne training at Ft. Bragg. At Ft. Bragg he was educated in military law and served as a legal assistant for the Office of the Adjutant General. While in the army he was presented with several awards including the Commanding General's Award, Sergeants Award of Excellence, and the Adjutant General Battalion Award for Excellence. He was also awarded the National Defense Service medal, Army Service Ribbon, Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar and the Parachutist Badge. In 2001 Cody suffered a parachute fall while training with the 82nd Airborne just prior to the invasion of Afghanistan. As a Disabled Vet, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Logan, Utah. Cody loved his Country and was proud to serve it. While serving in the military, Cody found time to continue his education where he was recognized for his accomplishments by being placed on the National Deans List. Cody loved the out of doors and would often surprise his parents with, "I am going camping." It did not matter the season, or time of day or night. Cody enjoyed being involved with nature and encouraged others in his family to do so as well. He was also active in various sports activities, enjoying hockey most of all. Even when he returned home with his injuries he sought opportunities to either play or attend hockey games. Cody was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where, at the time of his death was serving as Deacon's Quorum Assistant Advisor and Assistant Scout Master. His brother, Garet, was excited because he had just been ordained a Deacon and now his big brother could teach him and go camping with him. Cody loved his Heavenly Father and served with honor in his callings. He was proud to be an Elder and served in a missionary capacity whenever he could. Whenever he was able to share the gospel, he did so with happiness and enthusiasm. Just this past week he was able to hand out some Books of Mormon and gather a group of friends together to meet with members and the missionaries while he was in Florida. Cody was an Eagle Scout and earned the Duty to God Award. A viewing will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary on Sunday, April 13, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. On Monday, April 14, 2008, a viewing will precede the funeral services from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at Nibley 1st Ward, Nibley Stake located at 3701 South 450 West, Nibley, Utah. The funeral will begin at noon. Cody will be laid to rest in the Logan cemetery. In lieu of flowers it is the request of Kim and Anita that these monies be placed in a memorial account in the name of Daniel Cody Openshaw. You may donate monies at the Zion's Pioneer Bank or any Zion's bank. The monies will be used, as we believe Cody would want, to support the Daisy Openshaw medical expenses, his newest niece he had never seen. Daisy was born with a birth defect that will require amputation of one of her legs from the knee down before she is 8-10 months of age.
