The 1860 Federal Census shows that the family had moved to a farm in Albion, Dane County, Wisconsin. DeForest, listed here as "D.F.." is now 8 years old, Mary Lahona Babcock is 13, and Ella Corine Babcock, listed here as "Luella," is just 6 months old.

By 1870 Benjamin had moved with his parents to the town of Wells, in Freeborn, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, where at age 19, DeForest worked on his father's farm.

DeForest married Emma Aurilla Richmond on November 12, 1874, in Dodge Center, Dodge County, Minnesota.

The 1900 Federal Census shows DeForest and Emma living in Clark, Faribault County, Minnesota, with Inez, age 11.

The 1910 Federal Census shows DeForest and Emma still living in Clark, Minnesota, with daughter Edna M Allen, age 29. DeForest's occupation is listed as "Hatchman" in a Flour Mill.

Emma died on November 10, 1921. She is buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Wells, Faribault County, Minnesota,
