Nancy A Howell Hornbuckle was born 18 June 1828 in North Carolina. Her mother and father have not been identified. By 1836, she was living in Campbell County, Georgia where she married William L. Hornbuckle who had been born in South Carolina ca 1808 and died ca 1854 in Madison County, Alabama. William worked as a lumber grader before his death. His will was probated in Madison County and he left little inheritance to his family. William's brother, Richard Franklin Hornbuckle,[1813-1880] married Miss Emeline Howell [1816-1900] who may have been Nancy's sister or cousin. Very little is known about how Nancy and her family of five children came to Texas. Five known children were: Josephine Hornbuckle [1838-1910], Christopher Columbus Hornbuckle (changed his last name to Johnson for a few years before reverting to Hornbuckle again) [1840-1927], Marsha J Hornbuckle [1844-UNK], Tilmon Hornbuckle [1846-UNK] and William T Hornbuckle [1848-1900]. [ The 1900 census indicates that she gave birth to six children so one may have died young. It is likely that the family came to Texas, with Richard F Hornbuckle and family and stopped off in Arkansas briefly. Richard and his family settled in Cherokee County, Texas, and by 1855, Nancy married Hiram Hobough in Cooke County, Texas. They likely lived near the county line between Cooke and Denton County. The marriage to Hobough apparently did not endure, because by the 1870 census, Nancy was living with her son, Tilmon Hornbuckle and his family in Denton County. Her second husband, Hobough, was living with another family in Denton County. He cannot be located in the 1880 census, so may have died. The census indicates that Nancy could not read or write. By the 1880 census, she was a boarder living with the John Benton [1830-1900] family in Milam County, Texas. In this census her occupation is listed as knitting. Benton was married to Julia Morris [1835-1896]. Nancy's daughter, Josephine was married to Washington P Morris in 1859 in Cooke County so they may be related to him. By 1900, Nancy was living in Wood County, Texas at the Wood County farm. Soon after this census was taken, she passed away, and is buried in Smyrna Cemetery in Winnsboro, Wood County, Texas near her daughter, Josephine in an unmarked grave. [Information taken from 1972 Smyrna Cemetery book, various censuses, county marriage records, and probate records of William L Hornbuckle.]
