MYSTERY SURROUNDS SAN ANGELO KILLING
San Angelo – Nov 15 (1926)
Police today are endeavoring to clean up two mysteries surrounding the finding yesterday at Best the body of Cates for whom the officers had been searching in connection with the Hays and Miss Beam in a Dance Hall at Big Lake Friday.
They are trying to find the driver of car that was heard to halt early Sunday near the place where Coates' body was found. A large sum of money that Cates is supposed to have is missing the police said.
San Angelo Nov 14 (1926)
Cates ??, sought in connection with fatal shooting at Best Friday night of Constable Hays and Miss Beam, telephone operator there, and the wounding of Jones, was found dead in a hotel room in Best Sunday. He lay across the bed shot though the head with a revolver nearby when Wright, Reagan County Deputy Sheriff, entered the room. He evidently had taken his own life.
For thirty hours, officers of several counties joined by the Texas Rangers had combed a wide area in search of Cates who was an air hammer at Best for Murray Tool Company.
Hays and Miss Beam were buried here Sunday afternoon.

According to Beam Family history, the Beam Family had entered a hotel to eat when a drunken cowboy mistook Alta Beam for his estranged girlfriend and mistakenly shot Alta Beam in the head. Alta Beam was transported by train to San Angelo where she died or was pronounced dead. The Beam family had recently moved to Best from Cochise County, AZ. Emma Beam, the mother of the Beam family and two children had died in Cochise County. The father of Alta Beam was Seth Ezekiel Beam who is buried in Lamesa Cemetery. The Beam family moved to Stanton and then to Patricia. Alta's brother was Wren Beam who is also buried in Lamesa. S E Beam and Wren Beam were blacksmiths.
