"26th MI: John S. Rowland had enlisted (with his brother Daniel and later Joseph) in Co. D, 26th Michigan from Arcada Twp, Gratiot County on August 8, 1862, at the age of 20. He was wounded in the thigh and abdomen in action near Petersburg on June 17, 1864, and was later transferred to the 116th Co. 2nd Bat. Veteran Reserve Corps on April 25, 1865. John was discharged from Alexandria, Virginia on June 4, 1865, and was living at Cedar Lake, Michigan as of 1905. He is buried at the Cedar Lake Cemetery in Montcalm County. His brother Daniel had enlisted the same day at the age of 27 and had been wounded in action around Spotsylvania on May 18, 1864. Joseph would be wounded in July. 26th Michigan service included: Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, Mine Run, Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, Petersburg including Deep Bottom, Ream's Station, Cedar Level Station, White Oak Swamp & Hatcher's Run, Fort Fisher, including Sayler's Creek & Farmville, Appomattox and The Grand Review."
