Born to Lloyd and Helen (Vogel) Gifford. He grew up in Creston, IA and graduated from Creston High School in 1963. He attended South West Community College and then graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a degree in Education. Married Barb Taylor on August 20, 1966. He taught school in King City Missouri before being drafted into the US Army. He served two years during the Vietnam Conflict and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in connection with military operations against hostile forces. Returning from military service he obtained his masters degree in history from Northwest Missouri State University. He taught History at Villisca High School for 1970 - 1976. He moved to Carroll IA and taught history at Carroll High and Kuemper High Schools. He worked as a State Farm Insurance Agent from 1979 until he retired in 2008. He was very active in the community serving several organizations. He enjoyed music, fishing, camping, reading, kayaking, biking and traveling. He had one son and twin daughters and four grandchildren. He passed away in one of his favorite places on earth: Black Hawk Lake in a boating accident.
