He was a Clerk with Riggs and Co., a banking company. In 1869 and 1870 he was receiving teller with Riggs and Co. In 1871 he established the firm of Middleton and Co., bankers and brokers. Samuel Eliot Middleton, his cousin, was his partner. The bank failed in 1884.
