Mrs. Emma S. Gilbert

Mrs. Gilbert, nee Smith, was born in Akron, O., Nov. 20th, 1846. On the 8th day of September, 1869, she was united in holy wedlock with L. S. Gilbert, dry goods merchant of this village, and since then has been well and favorably known to all our people, being prominently identified with society and church circles. She united with the M. E. church 19 years ago, under the pastorate of Rev. Thomas Struggles, who voices the sentiment of all who knew something of her inner life of the Christian, as shown in her walk and conduct when he says in a letter to the bereaved family: "Her life was beautiful in the Christian faith, in the presence of the church and the world." Mrs. Gilbert was the wife of a soldier in our late war, and an active and honored member of the W. R. C., thoroughly in sympathy with that organization, and actively engaged, as long as she could, in whatever good work the corps undertook. For upwards of two years, she was in ill health and during much of this time, she suffered the privation of in-door confinement. In that she was both cheerful and hopeful, and when the hope of regaining her health seemed taken away, she meekly submitted herself into the hands of Him in whom she had learned to believe.

Her end came at 3 o'clock a.m., Saturday, May 25th, at the age of 46 years, 6 months and 5 days. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Monday, May 27th, at 10 o'clock a.m. A detail of veterans of Eaton Post, acted as pall bearers and the W. R. C. attended in a body. The beautiful and impressive burial service of the corps was employed at the house because of the indement weather, and added to the impressive solemnity of the whole service. The deceased was the last of five children to die. The venerable father, who also lives in the family, alone remains of all his family, and at the advanced age of 86 years, is called on to bear the burden of this bereavement. Of her family, husband and son remain, to whom is tentered the deepest sympathy of their many friends in this hour of sorrow. However, in the language of comfort, spoken by a former pastor: "Now her home is in the church above, We hope to meet her there." Until then, the benediction of her devoted life seems to say to us: "Farewell!" In her blissful state, she needs not ours.
