In 1918, he began work as a news reel cameraman for Pathe News. He directed and produced the 1918 documentary, Washington's Sky Patrol. He was the author of How to be a Newsfilm Cameraman and was known for his thrilling films. He was also assigned by Pathe as one of their White House photographers in 1918. In the 1920s he transitioned from using the light weight silent camera to the early sound camera units, which weighed as much as 1,400 pounds.
