Harold Francis McDermott was born at Anthon, Iowa, October 1, 1917, the son of Edward and Theresa (McKenna) McDermott. He grew up and was educated in the Anthon area. He married Loy Van Buskirk July 3, 1939, at Le Mars, Iowa. Later that year, the couple moved to California. Harold served his country in the U.S. Navy from January 9, 1945, until March 17, 1946, as a petty officer 3rd class.

They later returned to Iowa, where they farmed in the Mapleton, Iowa, area. In 1984, he retired and they moved to Washta. Harold loved his life's work as a farmer. He also found pleasure in playing cards, painting, and telling jokes, utilizing his Irish sense of humor.
