Joseph Henry Harshey was one of four children born to Harry Jay Harshey and Katherine Eleanor Bick.He was the youngest of the children and was the only son. His sisters were Edith Marie Harshey Young, Ruth Jennie Harshey Nisius, and Harriet Jeanne Harshey Kispert. He graduated from John Marshall High School.He married June Lucille Heine on July 20, 1940 at the Westpark Congregational Church. Two children were born to this union, one daughter and one son.

He was first employed with Cleveland Diesel Company and later became a journeyman carpenter. He purchased a small cabinet shop in Strongsville Ohio where he then moved he and his wife. He sold the cabinet shop and went to work for Sears Roebuck in their kitchen cabinet shop. Afterwards he went to work for Cuyahoga Community College.

When they first moved to Strongsville they settled on a property formally owned by his grandfather, Henry Bick. Later on he sold this home and he and his wife June built their home on Royalton Road also in Strongsville Ohio.

He passed away from ventricular rupture.
