Jim Elliott was born in Seaforth, Ontario in 1858. He came to Bottineau County in 1886 and homesteaded six miles west of Omemee. Neighboring homesteaders were Pat Scully, Harry Rid, and Tom Milloy. Jim married Mary Simena Hawn in 1898. She was born in 1887 and came with her parents from Canada in the mid 1880's. They settled south of Dunseith and later moved to the Omemee area. Jim was a lover of horses. In June 1906 when Willow City had their big fire, the fire engine from Bottineau was called. Mules were used to pull the engine as far as Omemee, then Jim's broncos were used to take the engine on to Willow City. The Elliott's had seven children, Olive (Hagen), Roy, Nora (Beyer), Gladys (Charnholm), Dorothy (Gagner), Alice (Beyer), and Vern (Vera.) Jim died in 1922. Mary lived with her son, Roy, in Spokane, Washington and Bottineau until her death in 1966.
