J. Raymond Carlson, 94, of Cambridge, formerly of rural Orion, died Thursday, October 15, 2009, at Hammond-Henry Hospital Extended Care, Geneseo. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19th, at the Beulah United Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley. Rev. Charles Cunningham will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Cambridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cambridge Chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services. Memorials may be made to the Beulah United Presbyterian Church.
John Raymond Carlson was born November 9, 1914 in Moline, the son of Oscar E. and Olive (Ruby) Carlson. He was educated in Moline area schools. His marriage to Dorothy Newman took place on November 16, 1937 in Kahoka, Missouri. She died August 18, 2000. Ray and Dorothy farmed in the Lynn-New Windsor-Alpha area for several years before moving to their farm near Orion in 1948. He retired in 1988 and continued to live on the farm until moving to Cambridge in 2005.

His memberships include the Beulah United Presbyterian Church and the Henry County Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Victoria Sportsmen's Club. Ray's hobbies were fishing, reading, traveling, and gardening.

Those surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Verna and Arlo Arkelle Sloan, Osco, Judy and David Anderson, Cambridge, a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Nancy Carlson, Bettendorf, seven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and six step great grandchildren. His parents, his wife, four brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter preceded him in death.
