Donald J. Kearney, 86, of 10611 Key West Drive, died at 10:40 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at home surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Key West, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald Bakewell officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 1:45 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1923, in Cascade, son of John and Grace (Tucker) Kearney.

He married Marian Knepper on May 30, 1944, at St. Mary's Church, Cascade; she preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2008. Together they raised 13 children and enjoyed 63 years of marriage.

Donald was educated in rural Cascade schools and was raised on the family farm. He farmed for many years and later was an independent trucker as owner/operator. In retirement, he worked for the Franciscan Sisters as a driver.

Surviving are 13 children, Allan (Vickie) Kearney, of Bellevue, Iowa, Linda Gernes, of Des Moines, Jan (Ron) Wheeler, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Colleen Kirkwood and Donna Beaman, both of Des Moines, Sheila (Joe) Pillard, of Dubuque, Mary Beth (Pat) Willenbring, of Epworth, Sherri (Rick) Treanor, of Dubuque, Kevin (Lisa) Kearney, of Waukee, Iowa, Joyce (fiance, Chuck Pastene) Hampton, of Rock Hill, S.C., Joe Kearney, of Dubuque, Terry (Angie) Kearney, of Hudson, Wis., and Jeff (Karla) Kearney, of Andover, Minn.; 32 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Coletta (Carl) Kintzle, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Virginia (Cletus) McCabe, of Dubuque; and sisters-in-law, Josephine Neville, Odelia Doden, Mary Lou Knepper and Maureen Knepper.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Fred Gernes; a grandson-in-law, Carson "Blane" Anderson; a great-grandson, Tyler Kueter; and brothers, sisters and in-laws, Joseph and Pauline Kearney, Clarence and Catherine Kearney, Wilfred and Mildred Kearney, Cecilia and Joe Healy, Frances and Laura Belle Knepper, Cyril Knepper, Monica and Chet Oyen, Hilda and LeRoy McDermott, Ambrose and Harriet Knepper, Harry Neville, Vernon Doden, Louis Knepper and Norbert Knepper.
