Tom was the third of four children born to Gladys Emily Bailey Keel and William H Keel. He is predeceased by brother number two, Donald, and survived by brother Bill of Florida, and brother Doug of Alabama.

Tom was an outspoken kind of person, often writing letters to his local newspaper calling attention to the deficits of his local area, in the hopes of bringing changes and improving life.

Tom was never a quitter. He fought the cancer he was diagnosed with in December with ferocity and dignity, choosing to hospice at home with his beloved wife, Frances.

I met Tom only once, in September of 2008, having only corresponded with him since December 2007 when his mother fell ill of a stroke. Tom was the driving force that united and binded those together who knew his mother.

Tom's most notable feature was that he hated shoes, therefore earning him the nickname of "barefoot Tom". True to form, when I stepped off the train that September afternoon, he was the only one there with no shoes on.

After retiring, Tom ventured into different avenues of staying out of trouble, first, running a Sabrett's NYC-style hot dog cart business, which earned him a story in the newspaper. And later, his own lawn cutting service, which did very well. His customers just loved Tom to bits.

Tom 's last wish was to be cremated, and further details of that are yet to be determined.
