John had his Masters Degree in Science plus Education. He had worked as a teacher for Buhler USD 313 for 35 years and then as a substitute teacher for many years. He was a member of the Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, the NEA, KNEA, National Association of Sports Officials, Kansas High School Activities Association and the U.S. Track and Field.

On July 16, 1961, he married Elaine Karber at Fairview, Okla.. She survives. Other survivors include: his children, Scott Franz and wife Pam, Hillsboro, Sheri Lautt and husband Jonathan, Olathe, and John A. Franz and wife Jessica, Kansas City; two brothers, Richard Franz and wife Joyce, Wichita, and Rod Franz and wife Karen, Manhattan; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Mary Janzen Franz.
