JOEL EDWARD ABBOTT
Joel Edward Abbott was the first son born to Rufus Augustus Abbott and Marie Pearl (Burres) Abbott. He was born In Hood River on April 14, 1922 and was named after his grandfather Joseph "Joel" Abbott. The family moved to Portland, Oregon where father Rufus worked in a warehouse packing fruit and vegetables. Moving back to Hood River Joel and brother Jim went to the Barrett School and pictures show the boys in the strawberry fields picking fruit with other family members. Mother and father separated after moving back to Hood River. His mother Marie remarried Glenn Blevins and moves back to Portland. Father Rufus never remarries and raises the boys.
Joel married Lois Bethene Hutson at Stevenson, Washington on March 23, 1942. He was 19 she was three days short of being 16. She was the daughter of Fred and Marie (Mack) Hutson and was raised in Parkdale, Oregon. They would move to Central Oregon and the young couple would set up house there in Deschutes County. WWII would come a year later and Joel would enlist in the Army on Nov 1, 1943. To this union three children would be born.
Joel would marry again to Billie Ann Ballard and three more children were born.
After the War in Central Oregon Joel worked at one of the many mills in the area, the family moved to Umatilla County when he became a security officer for McNary Dam. Working on road construction for the city of Cascade Locks, the family would settle down and Joel would spend the rest of his life there, some of the family still lives in the area.
Joel would pass away February 15, 1982 at the young age of 59 in Hood River, Oregon. He would leave behind his wife Billie, Sons; James , Patrick, and Jock , and daughters; Jean, Nancy and Michelle. Also surviving is his brother James in Redmond, Oregon.
