Ernest was 5' 8", blue eyes, he served in the Phillipines in the Spanish American War from April 1889. The 14th infantry fought all across the Bataan Peninsula, went from the Phillipines back to Ft Warren, MI near Detroit, Ernest stayed on at the Presidio Army Hospital in San Francisco. Later went on to Ft Warren where he was discharged April,1902, he brought home a machete. He went back home to TN where he married Etta Stearns. They came on the train out to Hoquiam, WA in 1903, Ernest was in the painters union there, he had a paint, wallpaper and picture framing store on L st. He was a life long carpenter and stone mason, never starting a new job on a Friday, or letting his picture be taken, if a black cat crossed the street, he turned around and went back. They moved on up to Malone and then Elma. The last house that Gpa and Sam built together in 1948-9, is still there, 14th and Young, Elma WA. We were living there when the ambulance came to take him to Aberdeen hospital. They built many houses and barns around Grays Harbor. The family tradition was for the old Davidson hunting rifle to go to the youngest son, so it was passed down from James to Menan to Ernest to Robert to Spence Davidson, and on to his son. bro ,Calvin had an extra thumb, no children. sister, Amanda Staples.
