After her death in 1891, he married Elizabeth Alvira Welch on August 6, 1892. They had four children: Virgie Myrtle, Harry Franklin, Emmett Leroy, and Dillard Howard.
In the early 1900s John and his family lived in Aurora, MO where John worked as a policeman. They then moved to Jasper County where he worked as a miner in the lead and zinc mines in Picher, OK. We find him there in the 1910 and 1920 census. By 1930 he appears to have retired and his grandson, George R Cannefax is living with them working as a chemist.
