Roy Tesnow, Mowry,Plunges 65 Feet to His Death Slips on Planks
Roy Tesnow, 43, Mowry, near Lavelle, plunged 65 feet
to tragic death at 8:30 this morning at the Mowry
colliery, located on the public highway between Mowry
and Lavelle, when he slipped at the head of a rock
chute at the breaker, landing on his head on the
railroad siding below, suffereing a crushed skull and
broken neck. He was dead when fellow workmen reached
him.
According to the report from the colliery, Tesnow,
father of ten children had been assigned to replace
some worn out boards at the head of the rock chute in
the upper part of the breaker.
It was while thus engaged he slipped on the wet planks
about the mouth of the chute and before he could grasp
adjacent supports, started on the headlong plunge.
Other employees who witnessed the plunge of their
fellow worker, rushed to the tracks below where they
found the lifeless form of Tesnow.
The unfortunate workman is survived by his widow and
the following children: Charles, Earl, Alfred,
Franklin, Dorothy, Anna, Gladys, Evelyn, Alice and
Grace, together with several brothers and sisters.
Tesnow was a native of Schuylkill county and had
resided at Mowry for some years, having been well
known there. He was an experienced breaker carpenter
and his tragic death was purely accidental and
primarily responsible to existing weather conditions
which made the timber work in the breaker slippery
because of rain and dampness.
handwritten date: Jan. 9th 1935.
