John L. Mefford, 85, of Springfield, Missouri, formerly of Lamar, Arkansas, died October 17, 2009, in Springfield, Mo.

He was born on November 20, 1923, in Lamar, Arkansas, to the late General Rosco and Sara (Sain) Mefford.

He was a Aviation Metalsmith Third Class while in the US Navy during World War II (Honorably discharged March 23, 1946) He was on the USS Roustabout (YO53) and the USS Engstrom (DE50) receiving the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal, During the Korean War he was a Corporal (Honorably Discharged June 22,1951) and from 1951 until he retired he was a Fireman at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, Ca and was of the Assembly of God Faith.

John leaves behind: One daughter, Linda Mefford of Carmichael, California; two sons, Odell Mefford and his wife, Tina, of Renton, Washington, and Everett Mefford of Carmichael, California; one sister, Gussie Killough of Arkansas; one half-sister, Jackie Pelts of Clarksville, Arkansas; one half brother, Doyle Mefford of Clarksville, Arkansas; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

John is preceded in death by his parents.

Burial was in the Lamar Cemetery, at Lamar, Arkansas.

CLARKSVILLE John L. Mefford, 85, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Lamar, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, at Maranatha Village Nursing Home in Springfield.

He was a retired firefighter, and an Army and Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was of the Assembly of God faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, General Rosco and Sara Sain Mefford.

Survivors include his longtime friend, Wilma Richardson; sons, Odell Mefford and wife, Tina, of Renton, Wash., and Everett Mefford of Carmichael, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Mefford of Carmichael, Calif.; sisters, Gussie Killough of Arkansas; a half-brother, Doyle Mefford of Clarksville; a half-sister, Jackie Pelts of Clarksville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Roller-Cox Funeral Home with the Rev. Amos Pledger officiating.

Burial with military honors will be in Lamar Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
