Lewis Mark Cook was born at Gilsen, Illinois, August 27, 1858. He was the son of a Civil War veteran, who came with the family to Fillmore county about 1870. Lewis Cook grew to manhood there and married Sarah Clementine Smith at Exeter, Nebraska, June 19, 1878. They later moved to Clay county, where his farmed many years.
To this union were born seven sons and two daughters: Lester A. of Edgar; Lewis D. of Berwyn, Nebraska; Ivan A. of Caldwell, Kansas; Melvin B. of Boise, Ida.; Glen P. of Roseville, Calif.; Mrs. Bessie Brubaker of Emmet, Ida.; Mrs. Faye V. Cassell of Boise, Ida. Vern L. and Lawrence E. preceded him in death as did Mrs. Cook who passed away on May 8, 1936. Following her death, Mr. Cook made his home in Emmet, Ida. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Fairfield; both he and Mrs. Cook having joined that church on November 6, 1927. Mr. Cook found much spiritual comfort out of his Christian experience to the very end.
Survivors include the above children, sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great- grand sons, one brother; Elmer D. of Imperial, Nebr., one niece and several nephews.
Burial was held on Saturday, March 7, 1953, at 2 p.m. in the MCGhie Mortuary at Edgar. Rev. Norman Crounse conducted the service. Sharilyn Cook Todd sang "In the Garden" and "Beyond the Sunset," accompanied by Mrs. Ruth Killion of Fairfield. Pallbearers were Irvin Essinger, Lewis Cook, Donald Essinger, Cyde Cook, Myrl Cook, and Gordon Sheets. Interment was in the Edgar cemetery.
